SARGENTO® CHEESE PRODUCTS

by Correen Coultas

I absolutely love cheese!  But I have discovered that not all cheese tastes like cheese, looks like cheese or melts like cheese.  There are three ways I love to eat cheese that are my testing grounds for buying cheese.  First of all, if I can eat it right out of the package and it has great flavor and texture it will be a winner with me.  Second, it has to melt just right in a grilled cheese sandwich and taste like cheese.  And lastly, when cheese melts in the oven it has to become one with the lasagna or pasta dish without being oily or curdling.

I have tried many kinds of cheeses: store brands, Kraft®, expensive (only at cheese tasting events and deli counters that offer samples or for very special occasions), cheese sticks, blocks of cheese, shredded finely and coarsely. Some are waxy, some very wet and rubbery (sorry Kraft® block cheese), and some even dry and powdery.  Don’t even get me started on processed cheese slices or cheese spreads – too much sodium for one thing and it tastes much like the plastic it is wrapped in for another! Yuck! BUT, I have found one brand of cheese that hits all the marks for me – Sargento® cheese products.  Sargento® cheese has it all: flavor, texture, and it melts well.

I realize that cost is a big factor in the purchase of cheese.  I shop wisely and I know that Sargento® products go on sale in my area every 1-2 months and the products rotate.  Shredded cheese is on sale more often than all the other products, usually once a month with the slices on sale once every other month.  The cheese sticks however are on sale 2-4 times a year.   With the added savings of manufacturer’s coupons many times you can buy Sargento® cheese for less than the store brand.

Cheese is my go-to snack right before bedtime.  I will have a cheese stick or slice and fruit snacks or fresh fruit.  It doesn’t matter to me what kind of Sargento® cheese it is because all the kinds I have tasted are flavorful, but my favorites are cheddar-mozzarella, colby-jack or string cheese sticks.  Cheese and fruit is an awesome combination! It staves off hunger and is nutritious.

Melting cheese is important to me in lasagna and pasta dishes, in grilled cheese sandwiches, paninis and on tacos, refried beans and chili.  There are so many different combinations of shredded Sargento® cheeses that I like to mix them up and try new flavors!  My very favorite grilled cheese sandwich is a light coating of raspberry jam, Sargento® swiss cheese slices (2 please) and 2 pieces of bacon, crumbled or whole.  The cheese melts perfectly over the bacon and mixes slightly with the jam – YUM!  If you use boxed macaroni and cheese, throw in a couple of slices of Sargento® cheese or ¼ cup shredded cheese to add better flavor to the cheese sauce.  The parmesan blends melt well in or on pasta and add flavor to salads.  The 4 State Cheddar shredded cheese is perfect over a hot bowl of chili!

Sargento® cheese comes in slices-regular and ultra thin, snack sticks or shredded-artisan blends, chef blends and off the block.  They have a long list of flavors and I haven’t had a bad one yet!  (In some areas other products are available, such as block parmesan and grated parmesan. You can check the Sargento® website for availability and store locations.)

The cheese lover in me made me check www.sargento.com for more information about my favorite snack.  The company cares as much about the information they provide as they do their products.  I especially liked the “Real Cheese” content under the “Cheese Expertise” heading.  This lists the kinds of cheeses Sargento® makes by texture, color, milk (cow, goat, sheep or water buffalo), and origin and gives a description of each.  You can find recipes of all kinds on this site as well.

I don’t have to feel bad about not spending $42.00 for 8 oz. of cheese when I  have a variety of really good cheese right at my local grocery store for much, much less.   Thank you, Sargento®!

I am not being compensated by this company for this review.  It is my own opinion ~ Correen Coultas

  1. We really love your site, it has interesting content, Have a great day!

  2. I love your cheese but why did you discontinue the Asiago ? It was the best !!!!

  3. I’ve been purchasing sargento cheese for years!! The last few months after opening the packages mold started to develope. The packages aren’t expired and have only been opened for 4, to 5 days. I called customer service the number on back of the package, the lady that answered said, once it’s opened it’s my problem!! I just wanted to know if there had been a recall. So so rude!! Moving on to craft cheese.

  4. You’ve got to be kidding me! Sargent mozzarella is awful. No flavor, loaded with sawdust (cellulose), and does not melt and toast properly. All I can say is YUK!!!!! But, on the bright side, I have always liked ALL their other cheeses! Forget the mozzarella…… Sargent has to fix their mix!
